The position initially requires close supervision, with incumbents learning Police Department and City policies and procedures. As experience is gained, there is greater independence of action within established guidelines. This class is alternately staffed with Police Records Specialist II and incumbents may advance to the higher level after gaining experience and demonstrating proficiency, which meet the qualifications of the higher-level class.
Minimum qualifications include: knowledge and application of laws, regulations, and departmental policies pertaining to records maintenance; strong computer skills and ability to use records management software; excellent attention to detail and organizational skills; basic business arithmetic; ability to perform and successfully apply skills in multitasking, prioritizing, meeting deadlines, and effective written and verbal communication. Ability to maintain confidentiality and handle sensitive information appropriately; arranging items or actions in a certain order or pattern according to a specific rule or set of rules; maintaining mental capacity which allows the capability of making sound decisions and demonstrating intellectual capabilities; applying general rules to specific problems to produce effective solutions; operating office equipment including computers and supporting word processing and spreadsheet applications; establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work; and typing at a speed necessary for successful job performance. Other requirements include: ability to work after hours/weekends when necessary; ability to successfully pass an extensive police background; possession of, or ability to obtain, a valid, appropriate Class "C" California Motor Vehicle Operator's License; and possession of, or the ability to obtain by the end of the probationary period, the California Law Enforcement Telecommunications System (CLETS) Certificate and the ability to maintain certification every two years.
Any combination of training and experience that provides the above-listed knowledge, skills, and abilities may be qualifying. A typical way of qualifying would be: equivalent to graduation from high school and one year of clerical responsibility experience which included extensive contact with the public.
