Other Conditions: This advertisement is for an 11-month, non-tenure-track faculty position to begin approximately in Fall 2025.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  1. Serve as a physician investigator and academic clinician with an active medical oncology-based clinical practice.
  2. Lead and participate in clinical and translational research activities, including enrollment in non-industry (e.g., NCI) and industry-sponsored clinical trials; development of investigator-initiated trials (IITs); advancement of translational research in collaboration with UH Cancer Center investigators.
  3. Serve as the Director of the Early Phase Clinical Research Center (EPCRC), responsible for oversight and coordination of all Phase I clinical trial operations and ensuring scientific, regulatory, and operational excellence in early-phase trials.
  4. Oversee all clinical operations of the UH Cancer Center, including strategic leadership and operational management of the Clinical Trials Office (CTO); alignment of clinical research efforts across disease sites and departments; integration of clinical operations with research, education, and community service missions.
  5. Report directly to the UH Cancer Center Director.
  6. Collaborate with Ka 'Umeke Lama (Academic Oncology Program) to align research and clinical education priorities.
  7. Build and lead a coordinated Phase I program for cooperative group, industry, and institutional/IIT trials across all therapeutic areas.
  8. Supervise and maximize patient accrual across all clinical trial phases, with a focus on early-phase studies.
  9. Develop and maintain strategic partnerships with industry sponsors and collaborators.
  10. Work closely with faculty at the UH Cancer Center, Hawaii Cancer Consortium, UH departments, and community-based providers to support high-impact research and academic initiatives.
  11. Publish research findings in peer-reviewed journals and present at national and international scientific meetings.
  12. Mentor and supervise postgraduate students (PhD or MS level), oncology fellows, and junior faculty as needed.
  13. Participate in equivalent graduate-level teaching, training programs, and scholarly activities that support the Centers academic mission.

Minimum Qualifications:

  1. Doctor of Medicine (MD) with board certification in medical oncology.
  2. At least four (4) years at the rank of Associate Professor or ten (10) years of combined clinical and academic medical experience, or one (1) year as a full Professor at another accredited medical school.
  3. Nationally or internationally recognized research accomplishments in oncology or related fields.
  4. Demonstrated experience leading clinical operations or clinical trial programs, including early-phase trial infrastructure.
  5. Strong leadership skills in clinical program administration and translational research oversight.
  6. Excellent interpersonal, collaborative, and communication skills.
  7. Proven ability to design, conduct, and supervise clinical trials, including investigator-initiated and industry-sponsored studies.
  8. Active and sustained national peer-reviewed funding portfolio.
  9. Robust publication record in cancer research.
  10. Demonstrated mentorship skills and commitment to fostering academic development among trainees and junior faculty.

Desirable Qualifications:

  1. Direct experience as a principal investigator of Phase I clinical trials.
  2. Demonstrated success in developing and expanding early-phase clinical trial programs.
  3. Experience in the development of new cancer diagnostics or therapeutics.
  4. Expertise in building clinical research networks, including industry, cooperative group, and academic partnerships.
  5. Understanding of cancer care needs across diverse and underserved populations, particularly in Hawaii and the U.S.-Affiliated Pacific Islands.
