The music director will also provide music at funerals and weddings that take place at the church. If the music director cannot, then it is the music director’s responsibility to find a replacement / substitute for that liturgy, and provide them with all the necessary information. The music director will also inform the business manager and the pastor of this change. The funeral home is usually in charge of paying the musician for funerals. For weddings, the musician and the couple make arrangements. The music director is in charge of preparing the music that will be used at the above-named liturgies, and also playing the piano during the liturgy, and if no cantor is available, then the music director will also sing in addition to playing the piano to provide music. The music director is in charge of arranging and practicing and performing with the choirs that are present within the parish. At this time, there is only a Youth Choir present. If there would ever be the creation of an Adult Choir, the music director would arrange and lead practices with them, and would provide the music to accompany them when they sing and perform at the liturgy. The music director arranges and practices with cantors. In addition, the music director is asked to recruit new members to be cantors and choir members. The music director is in charge of all copyright concerns and applications with music to make sure that we are using music appropriately for our liturgies, especially if the music is chosen from an outside source other than our music issue and hymnal. To this end, the following distinction is made: If an outside musician / music minister is present to provide music for the liturgy, event, or activity, then it is up to that musician / minister to follow all copyright rules and laws if the minister does not work with the music director to select and provide music. In other words, if an outside musician / minster provides music for a liturgy, event, or activity, then it is their responsibility to make sure that copyright rules and laws are followed. If the music director provides music to the outside musician, or affirms or confirms music selections from the outside musician / minister, then it is the music director’s responsibility to make sure that the music selected is following copyright rules and laws. However, for most cases / scenarios, the music director will be in charge of music selection and following copyright rules and laws as they themselves will be selecting and playing music at the gathering. If the music director cannot attend and play at one of the above-named liturgies, then it is the music director’s responsibility to find a replacement musician to fulfill that role. This is also communicated to the business manger and the pastor so all parties are aware of the change. The payment of the substitute musician is arranged between them and the business manager and pastor. The music director is asked to begin with the list of musicians that already regularly assist with music in the parish, then to look outside of that list if needed. The music director creates and maintains the schedule / calendar for who will be providing music at which liturgy for: musician, accompanist, and also cantor / choir. The music director is in charge of all music and sound equipment within church, such as, but not limited to: microphones, speakers, sound system, piano, keyboard, hymn board, hymn board numbers, cords, etc. If something needs to be maintained, fixed, or replaced, it is the responsibility of the music director to inform the business manager and pastor. The music director is asked to have a quarterly meeting with the pastor to discuss music, previous, and upcoming liturgies, and any other music related topics. These are scheduled, as needed, with the pastor. The music director is asked to continue their education in the music field, thus expanding their knowledge of what resources are available, new opportunities, and how to better the music program as a whole. Along with that, the music director may be asked to attend music seminars, music gatherings, or music continuing education classes that are offered by the diocese, Notre Dame, or another Catholic institution within the States. As such, if asked to attend, arrangements will be made ahead of time with the business manager and pastor to cover the expenses of that event. The music director will be required to attend these functions if the diocese of Fort Wayne-South Bend directs that they should. This will either come from the bishop, or the offices in the diocese Other seminars, continuing education opportunities, conferences, etc. will be discussed between the: pastor, business manager, and music director to determine if the music director should attend these events If the music director does attend these events, reasonable reimbursement will be given to cover the expenses associated with attendance and participation in these events, such as, but not limited to: Travel – plane tickets, mileage reimbursement (if using their own vehicle), and rental car fees and charges Mileage reimbursement is set by the diocese and is subject to change Food – while traveling to, attending, and returning from the events Hotel stays Fees to enter and attend the events The music director is asked to be reasonable when making these arrangements, and while the least expensive option does not have to be selected, they are asked to take cost into consideration The music director should provide in writing to the pastor and business manager the projected total cost of attending these events. That way, a determination can be made of whether or not to attend. (Understanding that the cost of food may not be determined, but the other costs, listed above, could be determined and proposed) The music director is also asked to keep expanding their own personal knowledge and skill as it relates to music. This includes, but is not limited to: voice lessons, instrumental lessons, and music lessons. If the music director finds a teacher / tutor / instructor who is able to help them to improve themselves musically, the parish will consider reimbursing the music director for the costs. The music director is asked to provide, in writing, to the business manager and the pastor the proposal: a short description of what it is, the length of time the activity will take place, and the total cost. Discussion will be had and a final determination will be made regarding reimbursement. The music director is asked to use the printer and copier located within the parish office to print and make copies of music related items, especially in large quantities. However, it is understandable that it may be more convenient for the music director to print a small quantity of items from their own personal printer at their home. Therefore, consideration will be made to reimburse or provide the music director with ink and paper to accomplish this task. The music director is asked to provide and teach music to the parish, choir, and cantors. They are also asked to ensure that music is in accordance with Catholic Church teaching, and adheres to the Church’s documents which concern Catholic Music. Creation of song sheets, worship aids, handouts, and pew inserts as needed for the participation of the faithful. The music director is expected to be a practicing Catholic who is in good standing with the Church. They are to also be an effective communicator, by email and in person conversations, and adaptable to be able to adjust quickly when something in the liturgy does not go as planned. On a weekly basis, not including holy days, or extra liturgies, the music director will probably spend, on average 3 to 10 hours per week. This includes: providing music at Mass, practicing outside of Mass, arranging and preparing music for the liturgies, and personal development / education of music. The music director reports to the business manager and the pastor, with the pastor having the final decision on all matters.
